The U.S. Justice Department will monitor the polls in three Michigan cities tomorrow.
The federal monitors will be in Detroit, Dearborn Heights and Hamtramck.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division plans to deploy more than 500 personnel to 67 jurisdictions in 28 states.
The monitors will be there to enforce federal voting rights laws.
“The bedrock of our democracy is the right to vote, and the Department of Justice works tirelessly to uphold that right not only on Election Day, but every day,” says U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. “We enforce federal statutes related to voting through a range of activities.”
The Justice Department has deployed monitors since the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Concerns have been raised about the potential for vote rigging and voter intimidation during Tuesday’s balloting.
Allegations of election fraud are handled by the 94 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices across the country and the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section.
