There’s some mystery about who’s trying to rally support for Libertarian Party candidates in two Michigan state House races.

In recent weeks, fliers promoting the Libertarians starting showing up in mail boxes at homes in the 61st (Portage, MI) and 91st (parts of Muskegon County) districts.   The fliers tout the Libertarians conservative credentials.   But the fliers don’t say who’s behind them.

Craig Mauger is the executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network.   He suggests the fliers may actually be intended to help Democrats defeat Republicans in tight races.

“These are races in the 61st and 91st district races that could be decided by a couple hundred votes,” says Mauger, “If a couple hundred Republican voters don’t vote for the Republican nominee, but vote for the Libertarian, that could potentially swing these races.”

Democrats deny knowledge of the fliers.

Republicans and Democrats have spent more than a million dollars in both races.

Democrats need to flip nine seats currently held by Republicans to take control of the state House.

More than $10 million have been spent on advertising in 15 state House races this fall.
