Flint’s new firefighters will have brand new helmets and other gear when they start work later this summer.
Flint firefighters respond to more fires than most departments in the state, and their gear shows the added wear and tear.
Fire Chief Raymond Barton says a quarter million dollar grant will pay for new helmets, coats, gloves and other gear the 30 plus new firefighters will need. They will finish training this spring.
“When we get ready to put them in the stations, they’ll have gear to actually go in and fight the fires,” Barton told reporters.
Chief Barton says his next goal is to start replacing Flint’s aging fire truck fleet.
