Michigan’s senior U.S. senator wants the Trump administration to provide more information to Congress about what’s on the table in talks with North Korea.
The on-again/off-again summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung Un appears to be back on-again.
Trump withdrew from a planned June 12 Singapore summit with Kim last Thursday, then quickly announced that the meeting could get back on track..
The presence of U.S. officials in North Korea is raising expectations that a summit between President Donald Trump and the North's Kim Jong Un will take place after all.
On Sunday, Trump tweeted that a U.S. team had arrived in the North to make arrangements for the summit.
Stabenow is glad to see the Trump administration is once again talking to North Korean officials about a summit meeting next month. But she says the president is not keeping Congress informed about the summit’s agenda.
“I think they’re probably still figuring it out,” says Stabenow. “At some point they’ll reach out to the relevant committees. But at this point there’s not been a lot of information shared.”
Though the Democratic U.S. Senator says, “One of the hallmarks of this administration” is it does not keep Congress as informed as past presidential administrations.
Stabenow says her top priority in the talks will be “to keep America safe” by not undermining U.S. national security.
