President Trump says he is looking forward to a second summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
That was one of many messages he posted on Twitter today, even as his Homeland Security Secretary declared it would be "foolish" to think that Russia has stopped interfering in U.S. elections.
Mike Bishop is the Republican Representative from Michigan's 8th District. Bishop and other members of the House Ways and Means Committee met with President Trump Tuesday afternoon.
Congressman Bishop joined Stateside’s Cynthia Canty to discuss his thoughts on the President's comments in Helsinki.
On the day of the joint press conference between President Trump and President Putin, Bishop issued a statement saying, "Vladimir Putin's Russia is not a trusted friend of the United States,” adding that, “We must hold Russia accountable.”
Bishop said after personal conversations with Trump, he believes the president does share the same concerns over election meddling. Bishop also thinks the president's actions at NATO lay a strong groundwork for dealing with Russia.
“He ramped up the need to make sure that we continue to invest in NATO so that we can have an adequate defense and he identified Russia as the main aggressor in the region,” Bishop said.
