Now, Rashida Tlaib will become the first Muslim woman in Congress.
On Tuesday, August 7, Tlaib won the primary race to fill the 13th District seat, formerly held by U.S. Congressman John Conyers.
Tlaib joined Stateside to talk about her historic win and what she wants to accomplish.
Tlaib says that traveling throughout the predominantly African American district revealed to voters that she was running because they deserve “a fair and equitable society.”
No Republicans ran in the district, which means Tlaib is set to win the general election and begin her term in January.
