Former Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley is joining the Small Business Association of Michigan in a new position created for him.
Calley will co-lead the organization as president, and he will be in charge of its communications and lobbying teams.
That's according to current president and CEO Rob Fowler, who will remain as the organization's CEO.
"With his policy background, his natural inclination to small business, and his proven support and vision, we just felt it was the perfect match," said Fowler.
Fowler said as state representative and lieutenant governor, Calley helped craft key changes in business taxes that helped small businesses.
Calley said small businesses power Michigan's economy, and he is eager to advocate for them.
"The new position gives me the chance to have my cake and eat it too," said Calley. "I can still work on public policy. But I can also work on purely private sector issues, helping businesses succeed and grow."
"As we move forward into the future, I think there are a lot of areas where there are opportunities for their to be stong, bipartisan consensus issues to work on - things like infrastructure, education, and skill building," Calley said.
Calley said his new position will give him the chance to work with small businesses for more employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
Calley said he has no plans to run for public office in the future, but he does not rule it out.
"It's not something that I'm looking to do," said Calley. "But it's not something that I'd totally close the door on either."
