State Board of Ed president: Michigan doesn’t have an education strategy
- A new report from Michigan State University finds Michigan schools have seen the steepest decline in state education funding in the nation. The report finds, when adjusted for inflation, total revenue for Michigan schools has declined by 30 percent since 2002. Meanwhile, Michigan ranks at the bottom for growth in math and reading proficiency.

Michigan-native brings Yiddish "tradition" off-Broadway
- Mikhl Yashinsky comes from a Michigan family steeped in show business. The Yiddish language and culture teacher at the University of Michigan is now in an off-Broadway, Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof. Jon Kalish reported this story for Stateside.
Coming soon to your car’s rear bumper: a digital license plate.
- For a century, cars and trucks have had license plates – a simple piece of sheet metal stamped with numbers. That is now changing as Michigan turns to digital license plates. The state has entered into an agreement with a startup called Reviver Auto, which makes electronic license plates. Neville Boston is the CEO of Reviver and talks with Stateside about how these digital plates work.

- Tammy Coxen of Tammy’s Tastings has come up with the perfect night cap, combining the best of an after dinner coffee and an after dinner amaro. The drink is the result of a collaboration between a Grand Rapids distiller and a Grand Rapids coffee roaster.
It’s not the size of the stream, it’s the pollution it carries to the Great Lakes
- It’s not just large streams and rivers that flow into the Great Lakes. Recent research examines the effects of smaller tributaries that feed into Lake Superior. Amy Marcarelli, an associate professor of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University, co-authored a paper on that research and talks with Stateside about her findings.
Secretary of State’s proposed settlement of gerrymandering lawsuit would redraw 11 House districts
- Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced today that she's reached a proposed settlement in a lawsuit against the State of Michigan brought by the League of Women Voters regarding gerrymandering in the state. Benson joined host Lester Graham today.
