A new bill introduced in Congress is inspired by the Larry Nassar scandal at Michigan State University.
The ALERT Act would require university leaders to certify that they have reviewed any reports of sexual abuses perpetrated by university employees.
U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly) is a co-sponsor of the bill.
“It basically addresses this problem that we saw during the whole Nassar scandal at MSU where senior ranks of MSU leadership previously said they didn't know, they weren't aware, they couldn't have helped, because they didn't know what was happening,” Slotkin said.
Slotkin told Stateside Tuesday the bill would also apply to sexual assaults that take place off campus.
“If it's a university employee who is likely being seen because he's a university employee and just happens to be off campus when the assault takes place, then that should absolutely be grounds for a title IX complaint like it was with Larry Nassar,” she said.
