Deadline to avoid tax foreclosure in Wayne County is Thursday

A deadline is looming for Wayne County property owners hoping to avoid foreclosure.

Taxpayers have until Thursday to visit the Wayne County Treasurer's Office to make a payment on their unpaid taxes from 2016 or enroll in a payment plan.

“The idea is that we are trying our best to help people so they can have some more time to pay off their delinquent taxes,” said Deputy Treasurer Roy Freij.

Freij says every taxpayer's situation is a bit different. He says it's best to come to the Treasurer's Office in person to find out which option fits.

He says there will be additional organizations on site to offer support – including the United Community Housing Commission.

“There's all kind of things that community organizations can do that maybe government can't do. So we try to bring partners whenever we do anything like this,” Freij said.

Freij cautions that the upcoming deadline means there will likely be long lines.
