When someone dies by gun violence in Detroit, it costs state and local governments $1.6 million.
That's according to a new report released by the local non-profit organization, Force Detroit.
The Detroit Cost Per Shooting report also finds that each gunshot injury in Detroit costs $1.1 million.
According to the report those costs include crime scene response, medical treatment, criminal justice processes, and ongoing victim support.
The report also finds that the bulk of those costs fall onto the State of Michigan.
The report was driven by the idea that tax payers will save money by investing in grassroots gun violence prevention, according to a press release.
