Construction crews will be busy in Flint this fall trying to finish replacing thousands of lead pipes.
The city of Flint has been replacing lead and galvanized pipes connecting homes to city water mains since 2016. The pipes were a primary source of lead leaching into people's drinking water during Flint’s water crisis.
To date, crews have checked roughly 23,000 service lines. They’ve replaced more than 9,000 with new copper pipes.
But the job of replacing the pipes is far from done.
A city spokeswoman says another 5,000 lines still need to be checked, which the city hopes to complete before the end of the 2019 construction season.
