Lisa McClain announced Monday that she is running for Congress in Michigan's 10th District, a seat currently held by second-term U.S. Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-Dryden Township).
Mitchell has said he is not seeking re-election to a third term in 2020.
McClain, senior vice president of Hantz Group, a Michigan-based financial services company, describes herself as a business leader and conservative outsider who has never held public office.
"I've built a business from the ground up. I've been a mother. I've been a wife," said McClain. "I'm not a career politician which I think serves me as a huge advantage."
McClain said she helped build her company to more than 700 current employees and 50 thousand clients.
She said one of her priorities is to reduce regulations.
"We need to get government out of the way," said McClain. "I think we need less government. I believe in the people. I believe people can make decisions on their own."
McClain said another one of her priorities is to reduce the federal debt without raising taxes. She said she would approach this by delving into line items in the budget to cut waste and find ways to create efficiencies.
McClain also wants to focus on border security.
In addition to McClain, U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Doug Slocum and State Rep. Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron) announced earlier in October that they are running as Republican candidates for the 10th District seat.
The Republican primary will take place on August 4, 2020 to choose the Republican candidate for the general election on November 3, 2020.
