President Donald Trump approved Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request Monday to mobilize up to 3,000 Michigan National Guardsmen for up to 90 days.
The call up is part of the governor’s COVID-19 response plan.
The governor plans to use the guard to help run mobile screening facilities, distribute food and medical supplies and support local public safety.
“Our dedicated National Guardsmen and women can help ensure access to meals for families who need them, or medical supplies for our health care professionals. They’ll help us get Michiganders tested and keep our public places clean,” Whitmer said in a written statement. “I’m happy that the federal government granted this request, and will continue to work closely with them as we slow the spread of COVID-19 together.”
The federal government will fund 100% of the cost share for 30 days from the date of the authorizing Presidential Memorandum.
Some guardsmen are already lending a helping hand.
A small number of guardsmen spent Monday assisting local food banks struggling to meet rising demand with fewer volunteers.
