Michigan officials are remembering long-time former state lawmaker Morris Hood III who died this week from COVID-19.
Mo Hood served in both the Michigan House and Senate, including a stint as the senate minority floor leader. The Detroit Democrat gained a reputation as a calming influence in an increasingly divided political climate.
The Detroit Democrat’s father represented the city in the state legislature, and Hood III followed suit, serving a combined 14 years as a member of first the Michigan House and then the Senate. He left the legislature in 2018.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer notes Hood continued his family’s legacy of working as a public servant, offering thoughtful advice and a quick wit.
Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell says Hood comforted her when her husband John died. She says Hood seemed like a brother to her.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan calls Hood a champion of justice and equality and says his passing is a reminder of how dangerous the coronavirus pandemic remains.
In recent years Hood served in the Wayne County Executive’s administration. He was 54 years old.
