The Associated Press has called the race for Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin in Michigan’s battleground 8th Congressional district.
Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin flipped the 8th District, which covers Oakland, Ingham and Livingston counties, from red to blue in 2018.
This year, despite President Trump being poised to carry the district again, she fended off a challenge from Republican Paul Junge.
“To win in a district that again went for Donald Trump, to win in a stronger way than we did with more votes—even with COVID, and our Michigan state students not being back.”
In a speech, Slotkin said she views the election as one of three phases, phase two will be the next 78 days and a peaceful transition of power, and phase three will be healing the country’s divisions.
Slotkin won with 51% of the vote to Junge’s 47% — a bigger margin than her 2018 victory. She got about 17,000 more votes by boosting turnout in places like Ingham County.
“Ingham County came out strong and had a great voter participation—both absentee voting and in person and it really is important to my race.”
Slotkin also improved turnout in Oakland County and cities like Rochester Hills and Brighton. She says she believes Democratic nominee Joe Biden is also poised to win Michigan.
Junge has not yet conceded.
