In a surprising move, Amber McCann, a long time senior staff member for state Senate Republicans, has accepted a new position with Michigan's Department of Attorney General.
McCann is currently deputy chief of staff and press secretary for Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey. She was spokesperson for the previous two Senate Republican leaders, Arlan Meekhof and Randy Richardville.
McCann will serve as special projects director for Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel and she will report to the Department's communications director, Kelly Rossman-McKinney who said McCann's start date is March 8.
In a written statement, Rossman-McKinney said:
"I am happy to confirm that the Department of Attorney General has hired Amber McCann as Special Projects Director in our Office of Public Information & Education, pending her background check. Ms. McCann has a reputation as a tireless worker and consummate professional and Attorney General Nessel is eager for her to continue serving the people of our state."
McCann confirmed the job move, but didn't respond immediately to a question about her reasons for making it.
When asked for comment on the selection of a senior Republican staffer and for more information about the new job, Rossman-McKinney said that McCann "brings a phenomenal skill set to the table and we are eager to work with her."
McCann's job change comes a week after Shirkey doubled down on false claims about the 2020 election and about the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.
