GOP-led legislatures across the country have passed bills adding voting restrictions.
State Senate Republicans have taken the first step to do that here in Michigan. They’ve advanced several election bills to the full chamber.
The legislation would create new ID requirements to apply for and vote by absentee ballot.Senate Elections Committee Clerk Heather Dorbeck noted several objections to the legislation.
“Not wishing to speak opposing all three bills: Nancy Wang, executive director, Voters not Politicians, not wishing to speak opposing all three bills: Tim Minotis, Sierra Club Michigan chapter, not wishing to speak opposing all three bills: Christina Schlitt, League of Women Voters of Michigan.”
The legislation passed through committee along party lines, with Senator Paul Wojno (D-Warren) the lone dissenter.
“Would the clerk please call the roll? Chairwoman Johnson? Yes. Senator McBroom? Yes. Senator Vanderwaal? Yes. Senator Wojno? No.”
Several audits in Michigan found that the state’s November election was secure and there was no systemic fraud.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has promised to veto any bill that adds any unnecessary obstacles to cast a ballot.
