Attorneys accused of knowingly using inaccurate statements in an attempt to overturn the results of Michigan’s Presidential election will have to wait a few more weeks to learn if they face punishment for their actions.
Michigan and Detroit officials say Texas attorney Sidney Powell, Lin Wood, and others should be sanctioned by a federal judge because their legal challenges were not about the truth but to purposely undermine the integrity of the election results.During a contentious sanctions hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Linda Parker accused the pro-Trump attorneys of not doing their homework on some of the evidence and witnesses.
Parker is considering whether to order financial penalties and other sanctions.
Attorneys for those who challenged the election countered that they were justified in using every avenue possible to argue their case.
The lawsuit alleging fraud was dropped after Parker found no evidence that votes for Trump somehow were destroyed or given to President Joe Biden.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the city of Detroit now want the lawyers to face the consequences of pursuing what they call frivolous claims.
Parker is granting attorneys two more weeks to submit supplemental information in the case. It's unclear when she will make a final ruling on sanctions.
