Winter weather has been disrupting High School sports schedules more than usual this year.
Dozens of school districts have canceled classes and other events, including sports, this year as the polar vortex sent temperatures plunging in January and winter storms have sent snow drifts deepening in February.
Geoff Kimmerly is with the Michigan High School Athletic Association. He says this year he’s seen high school athletic directors juggling winter sports scheduling more than any time in the last 20 years.
“I would say there has been more moving around of games that I can remember at any time,” says Kimmerly. “We are just watching people constantly postponing…now cancelling, meaning they won’t be made up.”
Kimmerly is concerned another winter storm may disrupt major cheer competitions this weekend.
He’s less concerned about the upcoming boys and girls basketball tournaments.
