Volunteer summer practice for University of Michigan ice hockey, field hockey, volleyball, and swimming and diving are on hold in response to positive COVID-19 test results and contact tracing protocols.

The University of Michigan has put voluntary summer workouts for four sports on hold.

In a statement, the U of M athletic department says it made the decision because of positive COVID-19 test results and contact tracing protocols.

"Our medical experts are providing the necessary care and communication to individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and those who have come into close contact with someone who has tested positive," the statement reads.

The affected sports are field hockey, volleyball, swimming and diving, and ice hockey. All the sports are scheduled to resume practice later this week or next week.

On July 24, U of M announced that 12 student athletes and one staff member had tested positive for the virus since testing began in mid-June.

The move does not affect U of M football.

The football team at Michigan State University has been quarantining or self isolating since a second staff member and one student athlete tested positive for the virus on July 23.
