After a radio and TV career that has spanned more than 40 years, Cynthia Canty is announcing her retirement. The host of Michigan Radio’s Stateside talk show will leave her news desk for some well-deserved travel and time with family at the end of this year.
“I’ve spent my entire 40-year broadcasting career working for great radio and TV stations in Southeast Michigan. The last seven of those years have been with Michigan Radio, creating Stateside. And I hit the jackpot,” Canty says of her time at Michigan’s leading NPR station. “It’s allowed me to be a part of a passionate, hard-working, smart team whose goal every single day has been to put the spotlight on people and issues that are important to Michigan. To tell Michigan stories. The nearly 7,000 interviews I’ve done for Stateside will always be a source of pride. It’s a wonderful way to cap off a career. Now it’s time to turn my attentions to family, grandkids and our cottage in West Cork, Ireland.”
Canty's experience has proved invaluable as the primary host of Michigan Radio’s daily news magazine program, Stateside. From interviews with governors, presidential candidates, authors, musicians and numerous other experts, the Michigan native has explored some of the most vital, impactful, and thought-provoking issues that matter most to people across the state.
“Cyndy Canty’s impact as host of Stateside on Michigan Radio for the past seven years can't be overestimated,” said Steve Schram, Michigan Radio’s Executive Director-General Manager. “Her expertise and ease of leading interviews on the vast array of issues important to the citizens of Michigan, as well as a broad swath of arts, culture and lifestyle stories, has earned Stateside a loyal following of engaged listeners. We are proud and privileged to have enjoyed Cyndy’s leadership as the host of Stateside.”
Prior to her role at Michigan Radio, Canty was a popular radio host, television news anchor, producer, and reporter in metro Detroit. She served as a news anchor and morning show personality with Jim Harper at WNIC-100.3 FM, WDTX-99.5 FM and WMGC-105.1 FM from 1980 through 2011. From 1987-1999 she also hosted public affairs programs at WKBD-TV, and served as reporter and anchor on WKBD’s “Ten O’Clock News.” Her reporting and writing earned her many awards, including an Emmy and honors from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Associated Press, and the Detroit Press Club.
In addition to her extensive work in broadcasting, Canty has contributed her talents to numerous organizations that mark her passion for supporting healthcare and cancer treatment including her work with the American Cancer Society, the Karmanos Cancer Center, and the Henry Ford Health System.
Canty’s retirement will be effective at the end of 2019. The station will begin a nationwide search for a new Stateside host later this year.
