Tuesday, July 18, marks a full decade since Detroit filed for the nation’s largest-ever municipal bankruptcy. At the time, many predicted it would be a tortuously long, complicated case. That turned out to be wrong—the actual bankruptcy case was remarkably quick. And while it fundamentally re-shaped the city and life for its residents in some ways, it left other things remarkably unchanged.
Here, Michigan Radio looks back on the events leading up to the bankruptcy, the bankruptcy itself, and the start of Detroit’s post-bankruptcy era—and how it all looks with 10 years of hindsight.
