The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department will add 24 new bioretention gardens in the Brightmoor neighborhood on the city’s west side. Bioretention gardens use permeable soils and other landscaping techniques to absorb excess rainfall that can otherwise overload the combined sewer system during significant rainfall.

NOAA, USDOT, and other agencies are launching a pilot program to develop methods for integrating equity into planning decisions regarding urban flooding.

A power failure at a pumping station on Detroit’s east side kept some pumps from working during a June 2021 rainstorm and prevented others from coming online. But according to the report, while the pumping failures likely “exacerbated” the flooding, it was the sheer amount of rainfall in such a short period of time that overwhelmed the sewer system.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for areas in southeast Michigan including Metro Detroit, Lenawee, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne.

Detroit and other Michigan communities are getting $86 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help with flood recovery efforts. That’s after a major rainstorm last June flooded many basements, homes, and cars in parts of southeast Michigan.
