Hemlock Semiconductor

Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) is a major manufacturer of a component for chips that can be found in cars, cell phones, TVs and other technological devices.

Wayne State University, Oakland University, the University of Michigan and Washtenaw Community College will each receive grants and matching funds aimed at expanding semiconductor programs.

“Michigan is among the first states in the nation to have created an all-hands-on deck consortium,” said Kerry Ebersole Singh, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s chief talent solutions and engagement officer.

The company expects to add 170 jobs at its facility near Saginaw with its $375 million expansion.

The president was originally scheduled to attend the event at Hemlock Semiconductor, but had to change his plans after a recent positive COVID test.

The former Michigan governor toured a battery plant in Midland and a solar energy business in nearby Hemlock.

A shortage of semi-conductor chips has slowed automotive and other manufacturing this year.
