Keeping elderly Michiganders mobile is the subject of a conference this week in Detroit.
Kimberly Lariviere is one of the organizers of the conference. She says most adults will outlive their ability to drive safely by as much as seven to ten years.
Lariviere says the Michigan Department of Transportation will be releasing a guide for older drivers at the conference.
“It’s just a guide for aging drivers and their families on trying to help you plan for continuing to safely drive as long as possible,” says Lariviere, “And when you can’t….some different alternatives to look into.”
Elderly mobility is bound to become a major issue in the years ahead.
The U-S Census Bureau predicts the percentage of Americans over the age of 65 will double in the next 40 years.
