A report being released Monday is expected to blame the road, at least in part, for a massive chain reaction crash on Interstate 94 in January.
One person was killed in the 197 vehicle crash along I-94 near Kalamazoo. The interstate was closed for days as burned and damaged vehicles had to be detangled and towed away.
Initially, much of the blame was placed on drivers traveling too fast and driving too close to other vehicles in snowy conditions. More than 60 drivers were ticketed.
But now attention is turning to the Interstate.
State Senator Margaret O’Brien has seen an early draft of the Michigan State Police report on the accident. She says the report finds several sections along I-94 lack enough space for vehicles to drive safely.
“This isn’t just…people drive too fast or they don’t know how to drive…there’s actually something wrong,” says O’Brien.
O’Brien hopes the report will help pave the way to improvements to the section of I-94, from Jackson to the Indiana border.
