Flint area gets 'Top 10' record-breaking snowfall, Detroit... not so much

People are digging out from the snowstorm in much of Michigan today. 

So did this snowstorm break records in Michigan?

In Detroit, 10.6 inches fell during the storm, not enough to crack the top-10 list for snowstorms in this area.

Here are the biggest snowfalls recorded in the Detroit area according to the National Weather Service. Most of these storms occurred prior to 1930.

  1. April 6, 1886 -- 24.5 inches
  2. Dec. 1-2, 1974 - -19.3 inches
  3. March 4-5, 1900 -- 16.1 inches
  4. Feb.  28-March 1, 1900 -- 14.0 inches
  5. Dec. 18, 1919 -- 13.8 inches
  6. Feb. 12-13 1894 -- 12.8 inches
  7. Feb. 19, 1908 -- 12.6 inches
  8. Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 1881 -- 12.5 inches
  9. Feb. 9,1911 -- 12.3 inches
  10. March 3-4,1895 -- 12.3 inches

The Flint area was a different story. 

That area saw the third highest snowfall total. Here's Flint's top ten:

  1. Jan. 26-27, 1967 -- 22.7 inches
  2. April 2-3,1975 -- 17.3 inches
  3. Jan. 4-5, 2014 -- 17.1 inches
  4. Dec. 11-12,2000 -- 14.0 inches
  5. March 16-17,1973 -- 13.7 inches
  6. Nov. 6-7,1951 -- 13.4 inches
  7. Feb. 24-25,1965 -- 12.9 inches
  8. Jan. 13-14,1979 -- 12.5 inches
  9. Dec. 18-19, 1929 -- 12.1 inches
  10. May 9, 1923 -- 12.0 inches

Mark Brush was the station's Digital Media Director. He succumbed to a year-long battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, in March 2018. He was 49 years old.
