Groundhog sees shadow on the day of 16.7 inch snowfall

Metro Detroit is digging out from under the third biggest snowstorm in recorded history. Officially, 16.7 inches of snow have fallen.

Dr. Jeff Masters of Weather Underground joined us today. He said 1974 marked the last single-day snowfall of this magnitude.

Now it's 40 years later and we’re looking towards the rest of the week:  Masters said we can expect a few more little snowstorms. Tuesday night is forecasted to bring an inch or two and Friday to bring around an inch. Sunday, however, may bring another 4-6 inches, he said.

And ironically, today – the day of shoveling through 16.7 inches of snow – is Groundhog Day.

The verdict? Six more weeks of winter, as the groundhog did indeed see his shadow.
