UPDATE: The National Weather Service has confirmed the damage caused in Portland was from an EF-1 tornado.
A strong storm has done serious damage in Portland, Michigan, a small town northwest of Lansing.
The storm was part of a long line of severe thunderstorms which swept through Michigan this afternoon.
Denny Cunningham is the owner of the Red Tomato restaurant. He says the quick-moving storm struck about 3 p.m.
“Came up through town. Came up the main street, Bridge street, hit a couple churches … came up hit Goodwill … crossed over and hit a hair salon … and took off the whole roof on that,” says Cunningham.
No word yet on the extent of the damage nor whether anyone sustained serious injuries.
