Inmates from a county jail and volunteers were filling sand bags along part of the Lake Erie shoreline in southeastern Michigan to help prevent neighborhood flooding from waves bursting through a damaged seawall.
The Monroe News reports that some residents in Frenchtown Township's Grand Beach subdivision and Allen's Cove in Luna Pier were evacuated Friday due to the rising water.
The Monroe County Drain Commission placed storm pumps along the shoreline to help remove lake water from around homes.
County Drain Commissioner David Thompson says the lake level is high and if "dikes aren't at a sufficient height to keep the water out" the pumps can't handle the amount of water coming in.
The seawall was damaged during an April 15 storm.
Luna Pier officials say sand and sandbags can be picked up at the city's public works facility. Some roads and streets in communities along the lakefront have been closed.
The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory Friday morning for the lakeshore. The advisory warns of high waves and high water levels. Wind gusts were expected to produce waves of three to five feet, and as high as seven feet.
